Shut Up, You Fucking Baby!

I had rather high expectations after it was on the "Best Comedy Albums of the decade" list by the avclub.

There are some good lines that other reviewers already singled out. I was rather struck by how little polished DCs rants are, and how poor the wording ... it makes you realize how gifted (and probably, better prepared) Bill Maher is, covering pretty much the same topics (rednecks, religion, politics) from a similar perspective. DC sounds half prepared, like someone at a party who has told the story to a different group once or twice, knowing the outline and some punchline, improvising the rest in so-so quality.

And one thing sticks out in particular: the utter lack of self-depreciation. There is no reason to humiliate someone for not turning off his/her cell phone ... cell phones are being kept turned on all day, and it's entirely ordinary to forget turning it off in the evening(it's different when you are attending a funeral, or maybe symphony hall with sting playing his lute). He did a bit about all people in Hollywood being laughable failures who keep on fantasizing ... he may be right, but he missed the easy chance to lighten up his vitriol by including himself (as he resided there himself), at least in jest. We are probably not dealing with a nice man here (and maybe even with an arrogant prick). If you think (like so many) that Bill Maher is an arrogant jerk, don't even consider listening to DC.

I bought this album having seen David Cross in Arrested Development and reading allmusic's glowing review of it. All in all, I was pretty disappointed. I laughed a few times, to be sure, but not nearly enough to justify the 2 hours I spent listening to it. Quite a few of his bits seemed to take way too long to get through, often rehashing some point several times before delivering the punchline, and only some of the times I thought, "it was worth listening to all that for that laugh."

A number of reviews of this album indicate that his stand-up has quite a few fans, many of them quite fervent in their praise, so obviously some people really enjoy his material. I wish I'd read through the reviews on here before buying it, though. If I had, I might have run across one indicating that this is the kind of stuff that most people either love and thrive on, or really just don't dig. Personally, I didn't really dig it.

Quite a few of the reviews on here cover much of the subject matter he rants about, so I won't dwell on that. I would suggest listening to a few snippets of the album before investing in it. You might like it more, or less, than you'd think.

i've owned this album for quite a while now, and was looking for some other comedy album to purchase, and saw the average "star" rating for this when looking for my new purchase. it was kind of surprising given the usual 4-5 star ratings for almost every cd on here no matter the quality or genre, but when i scrolled through some of the reviews i noticed for whatever reason some folks gave this 1 star. my question to those people are, why did you buy this then? how did these people even stumble across david cross in the first place and have the time to waste to post the review? i saw one person had even reviewed this album with 1 star because they saw a clip of cross' on youtube? now how much sense does that make? just because you believe something doesn't make it true, so take it easy and let the rest of us think for ourselves. to those people i say grow up, expand your horizons, and relax- it's comedy.

as far as the album goes, it is pure hilariousness. david cross is not afraid to say how he feels, what he thinks, and does not care who is offended. if you can't appreciate that, then this album won't be for you. if you like to laugh, and aren't afraid to hear something a little thought-provoking and different from what you may be used to being saturated with, then i couldn't recommend this cd more. i have listened to this album in its entirety countless times, and its still as funny as the first time i heard it. and to give you a little perspective, i usually lean a little more to the right-wing side of things, but am certainly no religious freak. this is what comedy is supposed to be- take it or leave it.

Good stuff. Not as great as "It's Not Funny," but well worth checking out for any fans of David Cross.

I had heard about Mr. Cross and decided to check him out on YouTube before buying his material... 15 seconds into one of the sample videos and, with respect to those who rave for this kind of "comedy", I pray that David Cross will "see the light" before his time comes... I shudder to think of "responsible" parents playing this CD in their homes and cars in the presence of young minds... Great way to bring up kids... is it any wonder society is falling apart?... Let's assume Cross and Carlin and the other "comedians" who use atheist comedy are right in their "comedic" view, then; What does that leave us with? In my humble opinion, it leaves us with absolutely no morals nor values to live by... I don't mean to use this review as a soapbox but the point is that "comedians" like Cross and Carlin are laughing all the way to the bank as droves of comedy concert attendeees and CD purchasers laugh nervously, hoping that these "jokes" convey the "truth" they are searching; for that will disprove "religion" a.k.a. Christianity to be true... Heaven help us! Rock on Cross... hope for your sake that you're right... Me? I have nothing to lose by believing... only much to gain...
