This item is pretty much only useful for hooking your Mac laptop (particularly the MacBook Pro) to an AV receiver. I'm using it to run my laptop through my home theater so I can watch Netflix instant streaming on the big screen. It's pretty much a single-use item (I don't believe many Windows laptops use this connector) but if you want to hook your Mac to the big screen and get full audio, it's your best bet.

I hooked up my MacMini with this and the sound is night and day from a standard headphone to RCA cable. I highly recommend this to anyone with a Mac they want to hook up to external speakers.

I purchased this cable to connect my iMac to my home receiver via the Mac headphone out/optical audio out port to my receiver's optical input. This cable plugs in just like a 3.5 mini plug but it has fiber in the middle to carry the optical signal. This cable works great and the price can not be beat.

I am successfully using this cable to connect my airport express
to my onkyo receiver. I am now streaming music from my mac,
over a wireless (linksys) to the airport express, through this
cable, and to the receiver. It works great.
